I love experiencing new places, especially when it includes wildlife. My main reason for travel is to see the world around me and truly get out to explore. One of the challenging things to do when planning a cruise is picking which excursion we are going to take in each place we visit. It’s hard to pick just one! On our Royal Caribbean cruise we made a stop in Belize City. My first goal was to see the monkeys! We booked the Wildlife Adventure Tour to Belize Zoo.
Come walk through the Belize Rainforest with me and explore the Belize Zoo!
Belize Zoo
I love wildcats. This little cub was being very active and not easy to photograph. He kept moving around and nibbling at the leaves. He sure did not mind the attention at all. He was even rolling around and playing at one point.
Throughout the zoo there were areas sectioned off for each species. Some you could get better photos of than others. All of them were surrounded by their own habitat, unlike the zoo back home.
The monkeys were my favorite! They were not kept in a small caged area by any means.
Some of the monkeys were lounging around on the trees, not caring an ounce that they had an audience. Whereas, others loved the attention and put on a show. This monkey was constantly sticking out his tongue and walking back and forth, being silly. He wasn’t mad, just cute.
The owls were beautiful and so were the parrots. They were kept in a fenced area so they couldn’t fly away. This made photographing them difficult but you could see them clearly.
They were so bright and colorful. The parrots were talking and making noise and several times they opened their wings fully for us to see.
Walking through the jungle was such a different experience than being back home in Texas. I loved every minute of it. However, it is hot! I do recommend you wear sunscreen, carry bottled water with you and it is suggested to use bug repellent. I don’t really remember being bothered by insects but it’s better to be safe than sorry.
At the end of our Belize Zoo tour we ate lunch at an outdoor cafe. The food that was served was delicious. The staff was very friendly as well. It was all included in our excursion that we booked with Royal Caribbean. Right alongside the table and chairs we ate at, was this pond filled with lily pads.
…and crocodiles! We had a nice time relaxing in the shade and cooling down over lunch. The wildlife never stopped surprising us.
We took time to snap some more photos before heading out.
The second half of our excursion included going out on a riverboat. The scenery was beautiful and we were able to see a lot of animals in the trees. Since we were moving along it wasn’t easy to get great photos but you could clearly see the monkeys swinging around.
We got a little wet on our boat ride. My husband was able to protect the camera and keep it safe and dry, but I do recommend taking a backpack. We weren’t soaked but we did get sprayed a lot. The boat went pretty fast at several points.
These nests can be found hanging from all of the trees. The nests are from the Montezuma Oropendola bird and apparently it is a popular thing in Belize.
Our tour guide slowed down the boat several times so we could take photos and to tell us about the wildlife.
There were wild dolphins and manatees swimming nearby and they came out of the water several times. Again, our tour guide knew where to go so we could spot them.
The day was a success and this excursion is one that I would highly recommend. There was walking through the zoo but it wasn’t too bad. They offered plenty of areas to stop and rest. All ages would enjoy this trip. The Belize Zoo also had a gift shop that you could purchase souvenirs and bottled water.
