Yelp, one of the best known stops for crowd sourced opinions of restaurants, also has mobile versions. Search by city, food type, or what’s nearby. One downside, it doesn’t load all the information that you’re able to find online and if you’re a frequent contributor your posting abilities are more curtailed. However, the app is always growing in popularity and new updates come out fairly often.

Hotels.com

Hotels.com app for android and iOS is a must-have for travelers who prefer to make reservations while they’re on the road. Pull up the app, and it will show you hotels that are nearby. Think of those long road-trips where you don’t have advanced plans, and pull off the highway to find somewhere to stay. No more need to call around or stop in to multiple places. Find the best price, book online, and call it a night!

Skype

Skype is by far the best way to keep in touch with those at home while you’re on the road. Download the easy to use app on android or iOS and sign in. Your contacts will be synced and you can conduct voice or video calls. It also has an option to buy credits to call landline and cellphones for a fraction of what an international phone card costs. This was perfect for us when we were traveling in Europe. When we found free wifi at local cafes, we were able to call back home to the USA, for free.

Google Translate

Google Translate is a free option to translate 58 languages in text and hear 23 languages spoken. Because no one wants to be stuck in a foreign country without the ability to translate critical (and not so critical) information. There are several other translation apps available but most must be purchased or are free but require an in app purchase of credits to use.

The very clever team at Charmin developed the SitorSquat app for those on the go that, well, need to go! You can find public restrooms nearby by pulling up this app. It might not seem like a big deal but can really come through in a pinch. You’re also able to read and leave your own reviews of the facilities. I know this app comes in handy when on a road-trip with kids.

When you’re on the road there can be a lot of downtime. Instead of hauling around paperback books, install the Kindle app on your device to call up reading material. You can purchase and download travel guides, free books, and the last bestsellers to help fill the gap when you’re waiting. I use the Kindle app on planes, when traveling by train and when riding shotgun on a road-trip.

I’m sure you have used Groupon for local events or products at some point. This well known service is not only restricted to your area. You can search their travel category or even change your city preference to be of your travel destination temporarily. This app has come in handy for finding fun activities to do at a discount. We used it to find a place to go horseback riding in the Smoky Mountains and tickets to a dinner show in Gatlinburg.
