As tempting as the sunny Florida beaches are during the summer months, our family has gotten into the habit of visiting Florida in the winter months, and we couldn’t be happier with our winter-season trips there!
When my in laws moved to Florida when my kids were little, I immediately thought of summers on the beach. When I was growing up, summer was the season for vacationing and winter was the season for bundling up and staying at home. My husband, after a few hot and sticky summers carting toddlers around to the beach, declared that we would only visit Florida during the off-season. As odd as I thought his plan was at first, our winter-time visits to Florida have been some of my favorite vacations ever.
5 things to love about vacationing in Florida during the winter
The weather can’t be beat. As a California transplant living on the East Coast, I admit that I miss a mild winter. While temperatures in the 60s and 70s might seem chilly to the locals, the 60s feel heavenly after being buried in snow at home. There is nothing quite like being able to pull out the sandals for a few days when you’ve been wearing winter boots at home. Lower temperatures make it more comfortable to be active outside, plus the summer humidity (and pesky insects) are gone for the season, making winter time in Florida the perfect time to be outside.
The prices are lower. Costs tend to go down during the winter months, from hotel and resort fees to the fees for a round of golf. Cheaper prices means that you can afford to do even more on your vacation. During the winter, you are more likely to be able to afford a fancier resort, or you can extend your stay with the money that you save.
Fewer people: The beaches and attractions are less crowded during the off-season winter months which means more space to relax on the beach and shorter lines at the attractions. When we go to the theme parks in the winter months, we’re able to get one more rides with not as much waiting around, which makes everyone happy. Fewer crowds means that you get to do more with your time and enjoy some true relaxation (without having to fight over the beach umbrella!).
Avoid hurricane season: Yes, the Florida summer sunshine might be tempting, but nothing ruins a vacation like a hurricane, and you never know when one will hit during hurricane season. The winter months may not be as warm, and you can certainly count on catching a few rainy days, but you won’t have to worry about being hit by a hurricane during your winter stay.
It’s romantic! There’s nothing quite like walks on the beach, toes dipping in the ocean water, while holding your special someone’s hand. Florida winters offer the best of both worlds when you’re vacationing with your significant other – moderate temperatures during the day so that you can see several sights and cooler temperatures at night so that you can cuddle in front of a fire together.
Florida has so much to offer, from Orlando’s theme parks to the coastal beaches. Whether you’re planning a trip with the whole family or just want to get away with your spouse, the winter is the perfect time to visit Florida!
