More and more people are moving away from computers and embracing mobile technologies for travel planning and booking. For people who rarely sit down to a computer, the functions available on handheld devices are amazing. But if you’re not ready to embrace completely planning your next trip on your iPhone or tablet, but there are some great apps available that make the travel planning experience easier and more organized. Whether you’re in the researching, booking, or traveling phase of your latest trip these apps will become your go to resources time and time again.
Hipmunk’s tagline is, “the fastest, easiest way to plan travel” and hundreds of users agree. This app is free and works on iPhones, iPads and android devices. You can plan your entire vacation from this app including preforming flight searches and booking accommodations. Hipmunk takes where to stay one step further by offering not only hotel options but hostels, Airbnb, and HomeAway housing options as well. If you’re searching for airfare in the US, it even includes pricing for Amtrak trains as well.
GateGuru is an excellent app for those who spend time in airports. You can find real time flight status, terminal and gate arrival and departure information, estimated TSA wait times, airport food and maps to navigate unfamiliar terminals. A nice feature is that when your flight information is entered a JourneyCard is created and updates itself in real-time for flight delays or gate changes. You can tap the airport code to find specifics about that location. If you’re a frequent traveler you might enjoy the Travel Stats section that tracks your flights, miles, and more.
TripAdvisor Offline City Guides are perfect when internet connectivity might be an issue. Download the app and access information about restaurants, hotels, attractions and more, all stored within the app, not online. Not all cities are available but there are many locations throughout the world, with the majority in the US and Europe. The app allows you to keep a trip journal by checking into the places you’ve visited, uploading an image, and typing in your reflections. You can then share with your family and friends once you’re able to connect to the internet.
TripIt is the travel planning and organizing app you’ve been dreaming of. It’s available on both android and iPhone. Connect the app to your email account and you can sync travel confirmations and information to the app. It will seek out confirmation numbers for flights, hotels, rental car reservations, and even restaurant bookings. You don’t need to be online to access information once it’s stored in the app. The app is free but there is an upgrade option if you’re looking for more robust options and an ad free experience.
