The Dominican Republic is a tropical paradise for getting away from the cold winter months in the States. Due to its southern location, the Dominican weather is usually sunny and warm through the months of December and January. The hurricane season is also over for the Dominican Republic during the Winter, making this time of year the best time to travel. The Dominican Republic is full of exciting activities to do and sights to see, both on and off of the resort.
On the Resort
Booking your Dominican vacation to stay at an all-inclusive resort is a very popular choice. These all-inclusive resorts usually include meals and alcoholic beverages, allowing you to focus on having fun and relaxing. Many of these resorts are located on the beach or have a swimming area, which is ideal for soaking up the sun’s rays. All-inclusive resorts also include some type of entertainment, whether it’s a comedy show or a dancing night, making it easy to forget the outside world while you vacation. Although there are plenty of things to do at the resort, there are also a number of things to do away from it.
Away from the Resort
Resorts are designed to pamper visitors, and many times that means that the native Dominican traditions are lost in the process. If you want to see the Dominican Republic for what it really offers, you should try visiting some of the local cities or towns. There are many different markets, both indoor and outdoor, so you can shop to your heart’s content. The fun thing with these markets is you get to barter, getting even better deals on already low prices.
Plan an Adventure Excursion
Another way to see what the Dominican Republic truly offers is to plan an adventure excursion. The Dominican Republic has some great areas that include everything from tropical beaches to towering mountains. You can plan an adventure excursion in any of these places. The mountains are especially beautiful, giving you the opportunity to hike through tropical fauna, rappel down the sides of waterfalls and reach the peak of the tallest mountain in the country. All of these excursions allow you to see what the real Dominican Republic looks like.
Step Back in History
The Dominican Republic is filled with rich culture and traditions dating back to when the first Spaniards stepped onto the continent. You can visit any number of museums dedicated to the history of this nation, including the Faro a Colon, a monument that houses the remains of the famous Christopher Columbus. There are also museums of art and culture that highlight the indigenous people of the Dominican Republic: the taínos. These museums include exhibits that demonstrate the life and culture of this group of people. You can also see the places they saw as important in the Cueva de las Maravillas. This magnificent cave has huge caverns, some of which include the cave art created by the taíno people.
