Everybody loves a deal! While the travel industry has seen some strengthening in the last few years, there are still many, many deals to be had. How deep the discount will depend on where you’re going and how much time and effort can be put into seeking out deals.
Social Media
Much of the travel world has moved online, so it makes sense that many travel deals can be found on social media. If you’re not using Twitter, you may want to consider setting up an account if just to monitor travel discounts. Users like @airfarewatchdog and @cheapestairfare are dedicated to just tweeting out the latest travel deals. Many airlines and hotels tweet out their latest deals and discounts.
Memberships You Already Have
Are you an AAA member? Have a Costco or Sam’s Club membership? Or even have a credit card? You can find travel deals just by utilizing these memberships! Call member services or search their websites to find out if they offer any travel deals or discounts and where you can find a listing. Military members and other professional associations often offer discounts to members. Go through all of the memberships you have and potential organizations you belong to that may offer a discount and start looking through what they offer.
Call a Travel Agent
It’s easy to think the best deals are online, and sometimes they are but travel agents are also privy to special deals and relationships that can provide a better rate then you can find online. If you find a good deal online, you also can bring it to a travel agent to see if they can beat the price. Some travel agencies also provide payment plans for trips. So, if you’ve got a big ticket trip on the horizon begin making arrangements as soon as possible.
Blogs
You won’t find direct deals on most blogs that you can book, but they are a great way of finding out about secrets to destinations you otherwise wouldn’t know. Travel bloggers have been there, done that, and most often they’re doing it on a shoestring budget. Plus we’re happy to share what we find! When you’re in the planning stages, seek out travel bloggers who’ve visited the destination to uncover ways to stretch your budget.
Ask!
It might be uncomfortable at first but the best way to find discounts is to ask for them! Chances are airlines aren’t going to give you a discount because you’ve asked for it but they may be able to tell you about an upcoming fare sale, allowing you to hold off on your purchase until the sale launches. Hotels can often upgrade you or give you a discount if you ask. Attractions may offer a 2 for 1 price or another discount that’s not publicized.
